What is Twitter

What is Twitter? That’s a difficult question to answer properly. What Twitter is to me might not be what it is to you or anybody else, and it isn’t even easy to explain how it works. I could say that Twitter is a form of SMS messaging software, but it isn’t.

It certainly isn't blogging, although some have described it as a micro blog. If you want to know about how to make blogging profit by using blogs intelligently, check out the home page on the navigation bar to the left.

I will do my best to explain this remarkable social networking service, but not in 140 characters or less! However, like blogs I do believe it is possible to make money using Twitter in much the same way as Blogging Profit shows you how to make it using your blog.

Twitter is a form of micro-blogging that allows users to send messages within a maximum of 140 characters including spaces. The messages are known as tweets, and are sent to the user’s subscribers, known as ‘followers’. Many are concerned at what is twitter going to cost to use. It is, in effect, a free SMS messaging service, although you will have to pay the standard fee to your phone server if you use your cell phone rather than your computer.

It was created in 2006 by American software architect, Jack Dorsey, as a means of communication between individuals in groups of people. It took off rapidly, and is now the most used online communications technique for short messages. However, with its popularity comes problems that are not associated with blogs.

These problems arise because of the autonomy of Twitter and the fact that it is not (yet) owned by one of the large search engines, although that day might not be too far off. One of the more serious of these is outlined beow.

Personal Information and Advertisers

A serious question that must be asked is what is Twitter doing with our personal information? It has come to light that Twitter collects personally identifiable information about members and shares this with third parties.

Not only that, but they think it’s OK to sell that information about you. The owners appear to believe that such information belongs to them and can be sold whenever they want to do so. If am wrong then perhaps they might inform me and I will inform you in turn.

Advertisers can also trawl the history of your tweets, and target you with adverts based on that history. If you tweet a lot about a specific topic then you will be the focus of advertisers offering products related to that topic.

Now for a sponsor's break:

It's not really a sponsor's break, but I have to support the costs of the site some way! I'd rather be honest than try to hide my advertising (what's the point in that? Totally against the objective of advertising!). It's actually a pretty good ringtone site, even if I say it myself!

Frequency of Tweets

Tweeting is now so popular that you have to keep an eye on who you are following. Some people seem to tweet several times every hour, let alone every day, and if you follow too many people you will find that you will have too many tweets to read. You will miss entire pages, and have to trawl back through your history to find the people you really want to hear from. Some people receive a tweet every few seconds.

Separate Accounts

There are ways of choosing the right people to follow, and I can help you with that later. For now, however, try to desist from following everybody you possibly can, and decide how you are going to use Twitter. You can have different accounts for different uses: a business account and a personal account, for example, or also a separate ‘friends and relatives’ account, where you follow only those you know.

Advertising

What is Twitter advertising in relation to general website advertising? Many people use Twitter just for advertising their blogs, websites and products, and their tweets are nothing but ads “If you need new trainers visit X”; “If you want to know how to use Twitter Click Here”. There are better ways of advertising using Twitter than these crude ways.

If you want to hear more from me, I can send you a regular newsletter on Twitter and related sites. Just fill in the form below and in return I will send you a brief report on Twitter that I wrote.

It gives you links to some free sofwtare and tools that can help you use Twitter easier, and also enhance your enjoyment of the site., particularly if you also use Wordpress for your blog.

If not, it doesn't matter much because I am going to be giving you a lot over the months, and I know what you are going to ask. What is Twitter information like this going to to do for me if I give it free? Honest answer: I will also offer you some paid products - there might be discounts, but you still pay for them.

There's nothing wrong with that, because some of them are well worht the money, and if you think you would like to make miney using Twitter, I can help you - a lot!

You will also get regular free stuff in addition to reviews of paid products that can help you to make the best use of social networking to make money without spending too much time on it. So it's not just about Twitter.

Just fill in this form: What is Twitter in relation to other similar sites? Twitter is among the top 4 most used social network sites, following Facebook, YouTube and MySpace, but is growing much faster than any of them. That means the number of followers will increase and also the number of users they are following. You will therefore have to be careful how many you follow if you don’t want overwhelmed by tweets.

Many people increase the size of their messages above the 140 characters by making two consecutive tweets: there is no limit to the number of times you can do this which sorts of defeats the object.

If you want to check out how different sites compare visit http://www.compete.com – registration is free and you can compare 5 different sites free of charge. You can also find out the traffic that your own site gets, whether it’s a blog, Squidoo lens or regular website.

What is Twitter going to be in a year’s time? Who knows! It is unrecognizable now in comparison to a year ago. Twitter has become a fabulous platform for stars and celebs to reach out to their fans: if you believe it is really them making these tweets, and not one of their staff! Perhaps I am a bit cynical, but I can’t really envisage Britney sitting in front of her laptop typing out a dozen tweets every day.

However, whoever types them out, there are thousands upon thousands of fans that believe they do, and that keeps then buying records. What is twitter to Britney? I don’t know whether it is clever use of a marketing tool or a genuine desire to personally reach out to her fan base – and quite frankly, I don’t really care.

To me twitter is a great little tool that I can use to keep in touch with people and also to let my customers know what I am getting up to while giving them a preview of new products and free gifts to keep the interested. What is twitter to me? Useful!

Fill in this form and you will get a free gift: how to integrate Twitter with Wordpress, but more importantly, information on how to use Twitter to communicate with others. Most people don't know how to use Twitter properly, and I can help you with regular information, and also info on what is happening with Twitter.

I belong to the blogs that Twitter and those that operate it run. I have access to information that most don't know about, altought you could if you knew the right blogs to read and the right Twitters to follow.

Eventually you might get that information, but it will not be free, so for now just sign up and if you like what you get, then fien. If not just click on the link in all of my emails and you won't hear from me again.

What could be fairer than that?

What is Twitter if not for people to enjoy using? You can do that best if you know exactly how it works, and how to use it properly.
